Great Intake – Low Fell is an intriguing name for this modest mountain of Cumbria England. That is the dark one in the background of my small oil on board study. Is it a classic British joke or just a strange name? Many Lake District names come from the Norse settlers of the 10th century – e.g. a beck is a stream a dale is a valley a gill is a gorge a tarn is a lake and a thwaite is a clearing.
